Overview

Oxford Brookes has partnered with Unite Foundation to support students who have previously been in care or are estranged from their families. Unite Foundation’s ‘A Home at University – Widening Access & Participation Pilot’ scholarship gives three care leavers and estranged students a free en-suite student bedroom in a purpose-built building for a maximum of three years of academic study. It covers rent for 365 days a year.

Key eligibility criteria

Students are invited to apply if they meet the following criteria:

  • Have a confirmed offer from Oxford Brookes starting in September/October 2023
  • Are a statutory care leaver or estranged from their family
  • Studying for their first undergraduate degree
  • Aged 25 or under on 1 September 2023
  • Eligible for UK home fee status i.e. not an international student

Eligibility criteria

Application process

The application process has three stages:

  • If eligible, students complete an online application form available on the Unite Foundation’s website. Students will be asked to upload evidence of eligibility and details about where they are studying.
  • Oxford Brookes will check the eligibility of the application via an online portal.
  • Unite Foundation then undertakes the selection process. The scholarship selection is done blindly to ensure fairness across applicants.

Important dates are as follows:

  • 1 January 2023: scheme open for applications
  • 14 June 2023: scheme closed for applications
  • 5 July 2023: successful applicants informed.
