We recognise that each student will have a unique set of needs and preferences. We have a number of different accommodation types and application processes to ensure as many of our students as possible feel supported and comfortable in halls at Oxford Brookes University.
Single-sex Accommodation
When you apply for your accommodation you will have the option to select whether you would prefer female-only, male-only or a mixed flat.
We will do our best to accommodate these requests wherever possible.
Please contact us if you require any further information.
Quiet/Alcohol-free Accommodation
Following the success of our pilot scheme, we will continue to set aside some accommodation that will be offered as “quiet accommodation” and some accommodation that will be offered as “alcohol free”.
This will be in dedicated flats in Paul Kent Hall and Warneford Hall for undergraduates and Crescent Hall for postgraduates.
Please note, the quiet/alcohol regulations will only apply within the dedicated flats and does not apply to the surrounding flats or external spaces of these halls.
After reading the information provided, applicants will be able to indicate on their online application if they wish to apply to live in this type of accommodation.
Disabled students and students with medical conditions
We have a number of different accommodation types to meet the needs of disabled students and those with medical conditions.
We have over 40 accessible rooms across the halls - accessible rooms are available in Cheney Student Village, Clive Booth A/B, Clive Booth N-X, Clive Booth Postgraduate, New Clive Booth, Parade Green, Paul Kent Hall, Sinnet Hall and Warneford Hall.
Applying for accommodation
Details of accommodation needs will need to be provided when applying for accommodation. As part of the application you will be asked for supporting documentation. This must be provided for your request to be considered 'a reasonable adjustment' under the Equality Act.
You do not need to let us know about other medical conditions, such as dyslexia, which do not require a specific type of accommodation.
Supporting Documentation
Your supporting documents should explain your condition and be from a suitably qualified practitioner. It is essential that you provide this information with your initial application so that we can find you a suitable room.
Finding the best accommodation for your needs
Please seek advice on which accommodation may be best for you before confirming a booking. This can include a discussion with an Adviser about what living in university accommodation would be like and how it might impact you. You can contact the Accommodation Team or the Inclusive Support Service for help.
We may need to liaise with colleagues in our Inclusive Support Service to ensure we offer appropriate accommodation. Please be aware that this means we will need to share your data with them.
Please be aware that there is no automatic right to leave an accommodation contract once it has been confirmed online. We strongly recommend getting advice if you are unsure.
Reasonable Adjustments
You could still be allocated to your requested accommodation even if the information does not assess that your needs fall under the Equality Act. In this case your allocation may not be considered a 'reasonable adjustment'.
Reasonable Adjustments are made by the university when students are considered to 'have a physical or mental impairment and the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities'. If there are any costs, these are met by the university. To calculate additional accommodation costs we use as a baseline, the average room rate, which in 2025/26 is £188.32/week.
Couples Accommodation
Studio flats for couples
- First-year students can request a Westminster Studio flat by emailing us at accomm@brookes.ac.uk once they have an unconditional offer.
- If both occupants of the flat are going to be full-time Brookes students, either one can email us. The contract will be in one student's name.
- If one of the occupants is not going to be a full-time student (either part-time or not a student at all), they will be eligible to pay council tax. The full-time student will need to complete a council tax exemption form. Your household may be charged a higher amount of council tax if you do not declare your status as a student.
- Returning students can book Westminster Hall by emailing us at accomm@brookes.ac.uk when returning student bookings open (this is normally in February).
- Studio flats are for two adults only (no under 18s permitted).
Please be aware that any partner who lives with a student will not be able to keep a car with them while living in university accommodation. Students living in studio flats or family flats will be eligible for BROOKESbus passes, but partners and/or children will not be eligible for free travel.
Family Accommodation
Family Flats
This type of accommodation is not guaranteed and is booked on a first come, first served basis once students have an unconditional offer.
- First-year students or couples bringing a child can request a family flat at Clive Booth Student Village by emailing us at accomm@brookes.ac.uk once they have an unconditional offer.
- If two occupants of the flat are going to be full-time Brookes students, either one can email us. The contract will be in one student's name.
- If one of the adult occupants is not going to be a full-time student (either part-time or not a student at all), they will be eligible to pay council tax. The full-time student will need to complete a council tax exemption form. Your household may be charged a higher amount of council tax if you do not declare your status as a student.
- Returning students will be contacted part-way through their contract to ask whether they would like to rebook their flat.
- Family flats are for a maximum of three people (e.g. one adult and two children or two adults and one child - a child is considered to be anyone under the age of 18, including infants).
Please be aware that any partner who lives with a student will not be able to keep a car with them while living in university accommodation. Students living in studio flats or family flats will be eligible for BROOKESbus passes, but partners and/or children will not be eligible for free travel.
Gluten Free Accommodation
Starting in September 2025 we are intending to run a pilot scheme in which we will aim to have some dedicated "gluten free" flats for Coeliac/Gluten Intolerant students.
Initially this will be a trial based on demand. We cannot guarantee that everyone who wishes to take part will be offered one of the available rooms but we will try to offer as many as possible depending on the level of interest. The trial could also be limited to certain halls depending on the halls with the highest interest level.
Students who wish to be considered for this pilot scheme will be able to indicate their interest on their accommodation application.
Those living within this accommodation will agree to maintain a gluten free kitchen environment at all times. Any guests invited into the accommodation will also need to comply with the same considerations.
Students under 18 years old
Students who are under 18 who apply for accommodation will be asked to apply for three of the following halls in order of preference:
- Clive Booth Student Village - Blocks A and B
- Clive Booth Student Village - Blocks N to X
- Clive Booth Student Village (Non-Ensuite)
- Crescent Hall
- Paul Kent Hall
- Paul Kent Hall (Rowan House)
- New Clive Booth
- Warneford Hall
This is because staff in these halls are appropriately trained to look after students aged under 18.
A student will be classified as under 18 if they are still aged under 18 by 30 September in the year in which they enroll at Oxford Brookes.
Estranged and care experienced students
We have extra support available for students who are care experienced or are estranged from their family. This includes a bursary (subject to eligibility criteria) and a 52-week guarantee of accommodation.
You are considered to be a 'care-leaver/care-experienced student' if you are BOTH of the following:
- commencing full-time undergraduate study at Oxford Brookes
- a student who has spent a period of time in the care of a local authority (e.g. foster care, semi-independent living or a residential care home)
Learn more about support for care-experienced students
You are considered to be an 'estranged student' if you are ALL of the following:
- irreconcilably estranged from both your parents (have little or no contact with both parents and is unlikely to change)
- a UK student who is under 25
- considering full-time undergraduate study at Oxford Brookes
Mature students
Undergraduate students who are aged 21+ will be classified as mature students. When applying for accommodation, you will have the standard undergraduate hall options with the addition of also being able to apply for the Clive Booth Postgraduate Centre (38 weeks) if you wish to do so.
Where possible, mature undergraduate students will be allocated with Postgraduate students if you select CBPG, Crescent and Westminster in your application (please be aware that this is not guaranteed). If you would prefer to be allocated with other first year undergraduates instead then please let us know by email once you have applied or include it in the 'medical' section of the application where it allows you to add notes.
Assistance dogs
To help ensure we can provide a safe and accommodating environment for assistance dogs, that meets the need of the student, we have developed some guidance.
Only registered guide and assistance dogs notified to the University in advance of arrivals are permitted in the Hall. For the avoidance of doubt, therapy pets are not permitted.
