Teaching development opportunities

General Teaching Associates (GTA) Course

A three-day course for PhD students and others embarking on teaching and associated duties (e.g. leading seminar groups, taking laboratory sessions, delivering occasional lectures, and marking). Completing the course is mandatory for all research students who will be, or wish to be, involved in any teaching. 

The course runs twice per year on the following dates for 2024/25:

18 - 20 November 2024, Headington Campus 

  • Monday 18 November 2024, 10.00am - 1.00pm 
  • Tuesday 19 November 2024, 10.00am - 1.00pm (online)
  • Wednesday 20 November 2024, 10.00am - 1.00pm 

10 - 12 March 2025, Headington Campus 

  • Monday 10 March 2025, 10.00am - 1.00pm 
  • Tuesday 11 March 2025, 10.00am - 1.00pm (online)
  • Wednesday 12 March 2025, 10.00am - 1.00pm 

Upon completion of the course, participants will gain:

  • A certificate
  • Feedback on their teaching
  • Ongoing support throughout the academic year via monthly bookable office hours with an OCAED Educational Developer.
  • The opportunity to network with PhD students across the institution
  • The course is ideal preparation for progression onto Stage 1 of the EXPLORE Programme leading to Associate Fellow / Fellow of AdvanceHE. In particular, PGRs are advised to complete the GTA Course before applying for a place on the EXPLORE programme.
