I have always been openly out as a lesbian during my working career at both Oxford University and now Oxford Brookes University. Both environments have been incredibly supportive and I've always felt comfortable in talking openly to colleagues about this. Half of them were invited to my wedding in 2019!
I feel a responsibility to be visible to everyone and play an active role in ensuring the future landscape is an inclusive one, where respect drives behaviour and shapes culture.
The benefits of being out at work are many; but I guess the most significant one is the ability to be comfortable and be the best version of myself at Brookes, without hiding my true identity.
I love football and sport in general, and my sporting experience played a huge role in my gender identity today. Whilst at Exeter University, I took on numerous roles on the Women's Football Club Committee and I think that experience landed my first job at Oxford University. I am an advocate for the power of sport and activity, and the transformational role it can play in the lives of others.
The LGBTQ+ Staff Forum grows from strength to strength. Having like minded colleagues and friends on the group to work with and support adds so much value and richness to my day-to-day role at Brookes; hopefully making me a better, more informed, forward thinking and compassionate leader.
