At Brookes Sport, we believe that sustainability and sport go hand in hand. As athletes, gym users and active individuals, we rely on the natural world for clean air, fresh water and the resources that support our health and performance. But with climate change and environmental challenges impacting our planet, we must all play a part in protecting the world around us.
Sustainability in Sport
Sport has the power to inspire change and athletes can be role models for sustainable living. The choices we make, from what we eat to how we travel, can significantly impact our carbon footprint.
Major sporting events like the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup and Wimbledon have taken significant steps towards sustainability by reducing waste, improving energy efficiency and promoting eco-friendly transport options. For example, the Paris 2024 Olympics was the most sustainable Games yet, with a focus on carbon neutrality, renewable energy and responsible resource use. These global efforts highlight the crucial role sport plays in driving positive environmental change and we can all contribute at an individual level.
At Brookes Sport, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices that align with Oxford Brookes University’s 2035 University Strategy. We encourage all members, whether you’re a student-athlete, Brookes Sport member, casual climber or gym user, or event attendee, to take simple steps towards sustainability.
Choose Sustainable Nutrition
- Choose locally sourced foods to support regional producers and reduce carbon emissions. Fresh, seasonal food is often more nutrient-dense and flavorful.
- Incorporate non-meat protein alternatives like beans, lentils and tofu. These plant-based options are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, promoting muscle recovery and sustained energy levels while reducing environmental impact.
- Plan meals ahead and bring food to avoid reliance on single-use plastic packaging. Proper meal prep helps ensure balanced nutrition, prevents food waste and supports better athletic performance.
Use Low-Carbon Transport
- Active travel, walking or cycling, not only lowers emissions but also boosts cardiovascular health and endurance. There are many bike hire schemes in Oxford with reasonable prices, such as OxByke.
- Carpooling with teammates and friends is a great way to reduce emissions and spend more time with friends.
- Choosing trains over planes for long-distance travel. If flights are necessary, consider carbon offsetting to balance emissions and support environmental projects.
Reduce Waste & Reuse Gear
- Bring a reusable water bottle and gym towel to keep you hydrated, your workout hygienic and eco-friendly.
- All old or broken sports equipment can be recycled at our Brookes Sport reception collection bins and we will explore sustainable alternatives to landfill.
- Donate or recycle old shoes and clothing rather than sending them to landfill. Shoes and clothing can be dropped off at the Brookes Sport reception and we will recycle these for you.
- Buy and sell second-hand through platforms like Vinted, KitRound, or our Brookes Swap Shop, which can help you save money while reducing waste.
Support Environmental Initiatives
- Participate in local initiatives such as OxClean litter picks and nature conservation projects, which improve the environment and create cleaner and healthier outdoor training spaces.
- Support Brookes Sport and wider Oxford Brookes sustainability events, contributing to broader efforts to protect natural spaces for sport and the Oxford Brookes community.
- Lead by example, encourage your teammates and fellow students to integrate sustainable practices into your club and university activities.

Every small action adds up. By making thoughtful choices, we can help protect the environment while maintaining top athletic performance. At Brookes Sport, we are committed to supporting our community in adopting more sustainable practices.
Stay tuned for more initiatives and let’s work together to build a greener, healthier future for sport!
