Cricket

Established in 1992, Oxford Brookes University Cricket Club is one of our high-performance sports clubs.

The club welcomes players of all abilities, providing opportunities to succeed at every level of the performance pyramid.

Cricket activities primarily take place Brookes Sport in Headington, where players utilise indoor cricket nets for practice. Our talented Oxford UCCE cricketers, who were crowned national champions in the 2024 season, train and play their home games at Oxford University's University Parks. The Oxford Brookes BUCS team play their home games at Horspath Cricket Club.

Performance - Men's UCCE Cricket

At the pinnacle of our performance pyramid is the Men's UCCE Cricket programme, designed for elite cricketers with aspirations of securing professional contracts. Oxford is one of just five university centres nationwide offering this prestigious programme, which is run in partnership with the University of Oxford. Our programme has a strong track record of success, having won the BUCS National Championship in 2024, 2016, and 2019.

Men's BUCS Teams: We field one Men's team in the outdoor British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Midlands Conference League, which runs from mid-April through to June.

Women's Cricket: Oxford Brookes students have the opportunity to play on the Oxford University Women's team, similar to the UCCE programme. The women's programme at Oxford University is led by Graham Charlesworth, who also serves as the UCCE head coach and supports the Men's Oxford Brookes programme. For more information about women's cricket, you can email him at gmcharlesworth65@gmail.comor speak to the club at the Sports Fair.

Intramural

During the 2022/23 academic year, we introduced an intramural Indoor Tape Ball League, supported by various Brookes Union societies. Tape Ball, originating in South Asia, is a popular variation of cricket played with a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape, making it lighter, faster and ideal for indoor play. The league runs on Sundays from 17:30 to 19:30.

To stay updated on the league and learn how to get involved, follow @BrookesSportOxford on Instagram, where we’ll post all the latest details.

Coaching

Our Head of Cricket, Graham Charlesworth, is a former top-level cricketer with a long-standing presence in the Oxford university cricket scene. Each year, Graham assembles a coaching team that blends experience with a person-centred approach, reflecting his commitment to individual development.

Graham leverages his extensive network to arrange annual matches against professional County sides and balances his coaching responsibilities across the Men's and Women's UCCE programmes. Additionally, Graham serves as Head Coach for the University of Oxford Cricket Club and supports the Oxford Brookes Men's 1st Team.

We are committed to supporting aspiring coaches and support staff just as we do our student-athletes. If you’re interested in developing your skills and learning from our experienced coaches in a high-performance environment, please contact our Student Sport Team by emailing sport@brookes.ac.uk
