Additional language modules
Our university-wide language modules provide a range of foreign language classes for university students. This helps them meet the challenge of globalisation by improving language skills.
Learning a language is:
- Challenging but rewarding
- Good for employability or personal development
- An opportunity to engage in another culture.
We provide a number of language modules in:
- French (Beginners 1 to Intermediate 2)
- Spanish (Beginners 1 to Intermediate 2)
- Mandarin Chinese (Beginners 1 to Lower Intermediate).
Before you enrol, please check that the language module you wish to take does not clash with any lectures or seminars on your taught timetable.

We use the Common European Framework system to assess language competency in all language modules that we offer. If you are not sure which language level to choose, we advise you to take the online placement test available. Upon completion, the form will indicate which level would be best for you.
Full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students can take one free language module per year. Part-time undergraduate or postgraduate students can take one free language module every two years.
For instance, if your academic year starts in September, then you can take one free language module either commencing in September or starting in January. If you wish to study a language in both semesters, then you will have to pay for the second one. Similarly, if your academic year starts in January, you can take one free language module either starting in January or September. Adding a language module to both semesters will incur a fee. For further information on fees, please contact Student Finance: financefees@brookes.ac.uk.
Please note, Academic English modules offered by the Centre for Academic Development also count towards your additional language modules.
Our additional language modules are only available to students enrolled concurrently on a foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate or research programme of study at Oxford Brookes University (excluding partner colleges).
All our modules are taught mainly face-to-face on Headington Campus - therefore you cannot enrol if you are a distance learner.
Enrolment is subject to availability of places on the language modules and individual programme requirements. Please note many classes are very popular and class numbers are limited so places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.
*Please note some exclusions apply, for example courses with a compulsory placement component, distance learning courses, or courses studied at one of our partner institutions. If you are unsure please speak to your Student Support Coordinator or contact languages@brookes.ac.uk.
Students enrolled at foundation or Level 4 of an undergraduate programme can take a language module as part of their programme as an optional module (if their programme permits), or in addition to their programme as a 9th module. Level 5 and 6 undergraduate students can take a language module as an additional 9th module. All additional language module registrations are subject to availability.
To register your interest in an additional language module, please complete this foundation/undergraduate additional languages registration request form, which will be made available on Monday 20 January - Friday 31 January 2025, 16:00 GMT. You need to log in using your Oxford Brookes Gmail account to submit your registration request.
If you do not complete the above Google Form by this deadline, you will not be allowed to take the additional language module.
Once your enrolment has been processed, you will be able to view the module on your 'My Records and Results' page on Student Information.
Important: As additional language modules are fully assessed level 4 undergraduate modules, their result will be visible on your transcript as well as contribute to your Grade Point Average (GPA). There is more information on the GPA scheme.
*Please note some exclusions apply, for example courses with a compulsory placement component, distance learning courses, or courses studied at one of our partner institutions. If you are unsure please contact languages@brookes.ac.uk..
