Why should I study or work abroad?

Studying abroad helps you to gain a wealth of experiences, including:
  • developing new transferable skills and boosting your confidence
  • gaining international experience
  • improving your employability and enhancing your CV
  • developing a range of soft skills, such as problem solving and working with others
  • enhancing your language skills
  • developing your intercultural communication.

What are the funding options and what do they cover?

The Turing Scheme provides funding for students in the UK to undertake periods of study or work placement across the world.

Turing funding is awarded annually to UK universities as part of a competitive bidding process. If demand for funded spaces exceeds the amount the University has been awarded in any given year, selection criteria prioritising students from widening participation backgrounds will apply in line with the aims and objectives of the Turing Scheme. This means that individual student funding is not guaranteed even if the University is successful in attracting funding.

Please note that individual students cannot apply directly to the Turing Scheme for funding. The University will apply for funding on behalf of students and will distribute the funding amount it receives in any given year to eligible students according to the criteria mentioned above.

The Turing Scheme funding covers:
  • contribution to cost of living - the amount depends on the destination and length of activity and is worked out based on the Turing Scheme calculator
  • additional funding (cost of living) for students from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • contribution to travel costs for students from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • readiness to travel costs for students from disadvantaged backgrounds such as passport, visa or health insurance
  • additional support for students with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
For more information, see the Turing Scheme student FAQs.
