Over the last year, the University has implemented an important project to increase the number of teaching spaces on Headington Campus.

Significant work took place over the summer and was successfully completed in time for the start of the new academic year. Students and staff are now benefiting from two large spaces in the John Henry Brookes Building (JHBB), alongside improvements to the Gibbs Building.

The development of new academic spaces for students has now delivered:
  • a 200-seat teaching space on the ground floor of the JHBB
  • a 224-seat teaching space in the basement of JHBB.
As part of the project, the drop-in service for the Student Central Advice Team at Headington Campus has a new home in the JHHB Careers space.

This area has now become a shared space where students will be able to access a number of services including Financial Aid, the International Student Advice Team (ISAT), Careers and the Student Central Advice Team - you can read more about the shared student services space on the Student News webpages.

Work also took place in the Gibbs Building to ensure it meets latest standards and is future-proofed for further changes to our campuses in the coming years.

The University is working hard to ensure teaching space provision meets the needs of our students. This is particularly important given the planned increase in student numbers at Headington over the coming years, as set out on the University’s website.

Mark Tugwell, Deputy Director of Estates at Oxford Brookes University, said: “The creation of two large teaching spaces within JHBB has been an important project for the University. As part of our Oxford Campus Vision we are in the process of bringing together our Oxford-based activity on the Headington Campus and these high-quality spaces and improvements to the Gibbs building will help to ensure we continue providing an excellent student and staff experience.

“Our campus spaces need to respond to the evolving needs of the University’s community and the rapidly changing world of education and these latest improvements help us to achieve this.”
