Summer of sporting success
This summer has been full of sporting victories for our students and alumni, from cricket championships to Olympic gold medals!
These inspiring accomplishments are a testament to the dedication and hard work of the individuals involved, and everyone at Oxford Brookes is extremely proud.
Here’s a round-up of this summer’s sporting successes:
Our Men's UCCE cricket team won the BUCS Cricket Outdoor Championship Final against Leeds-Bradford at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Tuesday 2 July. This win capped off a remarkable season for the team, who had already won the Men's Premier League title.
Oxford Brookes University Boat Club (OBUBC) brought home six trophies at the finals of the Henley Royal Regatta on Sunday 7 July. The club competed in eight exciting races throughout the day against teams from all over the world.
Oxford Brookes Racing Autonomous excelled at Formula Student UK, which took place from 17 to 21 July at Silverstone, achieving second place in the AI competition. The team finished sixth in their overall table, but were the best UK electric team and maintained their record as the most successful ever UK team in the competition with eight outright wins in previous years.
Athletes from Oxford Brookes University Boat Club achieved gold and Bronze medals in rowing events at the Paris Olympic Games. The Team GB Men’s Eight, including OBUBC rowers Rory Gibbs, Morgan Bolding, Tom Digby and coxswain Harry Brightmore, won an incredible gold medal in their final race on Saturday 3 August. This victory came just two days after OBUBC rowers Oli Wilkes, David Ambler, Matt Aldridge and Freddie Davidson clinched a Bronze medal in the fiercely competitive final of the Men’s Coxless Four.
Brookes Alum Esme Booth also won a silver medal in the Women’s four alongside Helen Glover, Sam Redgrave, and Rebecca Shorten.
Oxford Brookes University Boat Club member Frankie Allen will be making her Paralympics debut as part of the ParalympicsGB rowing squad. Frankie has been selected to row in the ‘Mixed Coxed Four’, along with two Tokyo Olympics gold medallists, Giedre Rakaskaite and coxswain Erin Kennedy. Best of luck to Frankie and her crew mates, who will take to the water for the first time on 30 August!
