Student Community Wardens at a safety event stall in the Forum, Headington Campus

The Brookes Security and Community Engagement teams invite you to their personal safety event on Wednesday 22 March, where you can find out information and tips on how to protect yourself and your valuables.

They will be joined by representatives of Hollie Guard, the personal safety app supported by Brookes and Oxford City Taxi Licensing, who will promote awareness of unlicensed taxis and what to look out for.

The event will be held in the Forum, John Henry Brookes Building, Headington Campus, from 11.00am to 2.00pm, and you will be able to:

  • pick up free safety giveaways, play games and enter a competition to win prizes

  • find out about the new initiatives as part of the NightSafe Oxford Network

  • learn how to security mark your bike

  • find out about the effects of drinking, taking drugs, and spiking

  • learn about the help available and how to report incidents

  • have your say: give your feedback and thoughts on the initiatives in place.

Ways to protect yourself

It makes sense to take precautions when out early in the morning or late at night. Our Security Services team advises you to:

  • be aware of your surroundings - especially at cash machines and when using your mobile phone in public places

  • avoid carrying or displaying excessive amounts of cash

  • keep to  well-lit areas and use a personal safety app such as Hollie Guard

  • not accept lifts from people you don’t know, and only use pre-booked taxis.

  • keep a list of emergency contact numbers on your mobile phone.

For more personal safety advice, visit the Brookes Security Services webpage.

Nightsafe Oxford Network

Oxford Brookes is proud to be a partner in a new network launched in Oxford to help keep people safe in the city at night.

The Nightsafe Oxford Network brings together organisations in the night-time economy - including police, CCTV operators, Street Pastors, night bus drivers, taxi drivers, licensed premises, door supervisors and university security services - to provide a unified approach. It is part of the Safer Streets campaign to tackle violence against women and girls.

The measures put in place as part of this initiative include extra lighting in some areas, trimming back overgrown hedges to clear walkways, additional CCTV, Oxford City Angels and safety apps.

In October and November 2022, network partners held events on campus to raise awareness of the network and the various safety interventions. We would welcome your views on these, for example:

  • Have you noticed or made use of any of the interventions?

  • Do you feel safe in the city at night?

  • Is there anything we could  do differently or that you’d like to see that would make you feel safer?

Let us know by giving your comments at the event on 22 March or by emailing community@brookes.ac.uk.
