This principle means ensuring that all students are aware of the legitimate use of GenAI in Teaching, Learning & Assessment at Brookes.
The Artificial Intelligence section of the Academic Integrity Moodle offers a clear ‘traffic light system’ alerting students to acceptable, at-risk and inappropriate GenAI use at Brookes, which staff will also find useful.
Staff should make sure that students are aware of the Moodle course and how/when they can complete it.
When assessing work, staff are able to see the students’ GenAI declaration template and understand how the student has used GenAI.
Undeclared use of AI tools is not allowed and may lead to a SIRT investigation, so it is important for Module Leaders to make clear to students that they must complete the declaration form if they use AI tools.
Pedagogic Practice 3: Use the Brookes’ Traffic Light system to stimulate discussion
The Traffic Lights can be used to generate dialogue with students - inviting students to identify situations where they are not sure how the model applies. For example, students may not appreciate that they can ask tools like ChatGPT to evaluate something they have written to identify and explain possible errors in the text. This is very different from simply asking ChatGPT to rewrite the whole text or parts of it. As the writer, they have retained responsibility for how they respond to the feedback. They can then decide how to resolve those errors if they feel they are important or necessary.
