I am the Web & DTP Administrator for Human Resources.
I manage the websites of the HR Directorate, social media and marketing in OCSLD. I am also the Disability Members Rep for the Brookes branch of Unison.
I have been at Oxford Brookes for 27 years and was diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder aged 21. I have had several episodes of the illness over the years which have required periods of sick leave but also live with complications on a day to day basis. My immediate team together with the Senior Occupational Adviser have been a great support and are very understanding about my disability. Occupational Health helped draw up an agreement document which gives important information on symptoms and help needed when appropriate. In my experience Oxford Brookes has been committed to supporting my needs.
It’s good to know there are other people who understand and are able to live full lives with a disability.
As there is still a stigma attached to mental health issues it is important to help others understand my illness. I have been lucky to be in a department where people have reassured me and want to be supportive. I would like to think that being open would help others in similar circumstances and I am happy to talk about my experiences.
I have a great social life, loyal friends and a very supportive family network. Life is hard sometimes but it’s great to have people who care about you.
Brookes is an inclusive community and, in my experience, staff have been very understanding particularly Occupational Health.
