Subject databases provide the best way of finding journal articles, published worldwide, on different aspects of the sciences - and are highly recommended.
Web of Science
This is a large multi-disciplinary database, could be useful for international material. You can also do a search on this database to find other articles which have used a specific article as a reference. Have a look at the Citation Searching guide on our 'How to...' list for more information on how to do this.
Academic Search Complete
This is a general database which covers all subject areas including health. If you aren't sure whether your topic might stray from healthcare into education, politics or even tourism, then search this database and see what journals come up.
Medline
Extensive medical database. Searched automatically as part of a PubMed search, so you don't need to search both databases, but if you're struggling with a PubMed search then try this instead. It's 99% peer reviewed and is easy to use as it's hosted by the same people as CINAHL so looks the same.
PubMed
If you're looking for information about medical conditions and their treatment, PubMed is a huge and useful database. It's really good for looking at the science behind conditions, good for things like finding information on pre-hospital emergency care worldwide, but less good at finding articles about thoughts and feelings.
Science Direct
Contains around 2500 full text journals published by Elsevier, mainly in science, technology and medicine. Full text coverage for most journals in the collection is available from 2002 to present.
Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection
A collection of animated, seminar style talks by leading world experts on all aspects of biomedical and life sciences. The talks can be searched as a whole but are arranged into series such as Apoptosis, Cancer, Epidemiology, Human Genetics, Obesity, Retroviruses, Stem Cells etc for focussed browsing. There are around 3000 talks, which vary in length from about 20 minutes to an hour. The collection will be regularly expanded and updated as new series and talks are added.
Comprehensive Physiology
A database that covers all aspects of physiology and includes over 30,000 pages from the Handbook of physiology series.
BIOSIS Citation Index
Life sciences and biomedical research - includes agriculture, animal studies, bio-engineering, bio-physics, botany, ecology, microbiology, pharmacology, zoology and experimental clinical medicine. Over 18 million records. 1969 to present.
BioMed Central Databases
A catalogue of more than 1100 sites covering a wide range of biomedical topics from Alzheimer disease to zebrafish anatomy. Some of the databases contain experimental data; others provide synopses of published information. Most of the databases are freely accessible and should be of interest to researchers, teachers and students.
Box of Broadcasts (BoB)
An online archive giving you access to thousands of recorded radio and TV programmes including films. It allows users to record programmes which will then be stored on the database. Log in when prompted with your Brookes username and password.
