Studios and facilities

The heart of our community

At the Oxford School of Architecture, the studio culture is the cornerstone of your experience, fostering an environment where creativity and collaboration thrive.

Our 24/7 studios serve as dynamic spaces where students learn through making, engaging deeply with design processes and working alongside peers and staff to explore innovative architectural solutions.

“The studio spaces here exist almost as one large city and the individual studios are their own neighbourhoods.”

Amin, Postgraduate Architecture student

Studio life: our architectural neighbourhoods

Pushing the boundaries

Experimental studios

We encourage students to push the boundaries of traditional architectural practice. Our experimental studio challenges conventional design studio structures, prompting students to explore new architectural agendas, technologies and methodologies. This fosters autonomy and innovation, essential traits for contemporary architects.

Regular critiques, workshops and seminars provide platforms for students to present their work, receive feedback and engage in critical discussions, enhancing their design skills and intellectual growth.

Workshop, print room and computer suites

As well as the studios, which include designated undergraduate and Interior Architecture studios, the architecture workshop and print room are packed with equipment, including laser cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers and scanners, with training provided by our expert workshop staff. And, as you’d expect, the computer suites have all the latest industry-relevant modelling software.

“Explore new architectural agendas, technologies and methodologies... enhance your design skills and intellectual growth.”

Study in our award-winning Abercrombie Building

Oxford School of Architecture is based in the Abercrombie Building at the Oxford Brookes Headington Campus

The building was designed by Design Engine Architects and won awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for both its design and sustainability.

With glass bridges connecting the two sides of the building, it is an example of best practice for sustainability, construction, design and facilities. It’s a place of inspiration for the next generation of architects to create their own visions.

Explore the Abercrombie Building by signing up to our campus tours at any time of the year.
