This description has been produced to clarify the term University Infrastructure (UI). All work that is defined as UI must be carried out in accordance with the University’s Health and Safety arrangements.
All of the following elements of the physical building and estate are classified as UI:
- All structural elements of the building
- All elements of building fabric, walls, floor slabs, roofs
- All steps, stairs, fixed ladders, handrails, edge protection and balustrades
- All external windows, glazing, doors, louvers, roller shutters and access panels
- All internal fire-resisting doors (fire doors)
- All internal fire-resisting walls and structure
- All external walls, structures, pavements, roads, hard-standing, yards, bunds, fences, gates, grassed areas, gardens, ponds, watercourses, ditches, trees, woodland and all areas outside of buildings and building compounds
- Building Services relating to the operation of the building are classified as UI, including but not limited to:
- Mains services – gas, electricity HV and LV to building, water, foul and surface drainage including any standby generators or UPS systems that link with the mains electrical systems
- Heating systems* – boilers, pumps, radiators, valves, lagging, thermostats, distribution pipework, tanks, calorifiers
- Cooling systems* – compressors, pipework, control units, ceiling units
- Ventilation systems – toilet extract systems, fans, motors, louvers, grilles, ductwork, controllers, dampers
- Water systems – hot, cold, potable, distribution pipe work, taps, valves, pumps, heaters, tanks
- Waste systems – pipes, sinks, basins, toilets, urinals, drains, inspection chambers
- Passenger and goods lifts
- Electrical power – all systems fixed to or run within the building fabric, including conduits, trucking and ductwork, ceiling and floor voids, specifically excluding any trailing leads and extension leads to connect departmental equipment
- Lighting systems* – emergency, general lighting, external, fixed
- Alarms – fire, disabled, lift, building services related
- Door locks - door locking systems that are integrated into the physical door and access
- IT structured cabling – all cabling relating to data and IT installations (IT Department)
- Access control equipment fitted to external and internal doors
* Please note if alterations to lighting, cooling or heating systems or the installation of new systems are required this should be reviewed beforehand with the Energy and Environment Team to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and the University’s Energy Policy.
The following are not considered as elements of UI but note precautions to be considered:
- Internal wall finishes
- Internal floor finishes
- Internal ceiling finishes
- Loose furniture and equipment
- Fixed furniture and equipment: fixed furniture and equipment includes but is not limited to: blinds, curtains, white-boards, notice boards, shelves, pictures, wall clocks, coat hooks. In particular Schools and Departments must consult the Facilities Manager for that building so that the Asbestos Register can be referenced prior to any drilling or nailing into UI.
- Services relating to the operation of process equipment within the building, including but not limited to:
- Cooling systems – compressors, pipework, control units relating to cooling process for equipment owned and operated by the School or Department
- Ventilation systems – fans, motors, louvres, grilles, ductwork, controllers, dampers for local exhaust ventilation (LEV) for process equipment owned and operated by the School or Department
- Water systems – hot, cold, distribution pipe work, taps, valves, pumps, heaters, tanks for process equipment owned and operated by the School or Department
- Gas cylinders – all cylinder and tanked gas systems including cylinders, regulators, pipework, valves, safety systems and alarms owned and operated by the School or Department
- Free standing lifting equipment including forklifts, hoists, MEWPs, chains, slings, eyebolts.
- Equipment inter-lock systems
- Compressed air and vacuum systems- compressors, pipework, receivers, control units, filters and taps owned and operated by the School or Department
- Lighting – task-specific or equipment related lighting
- Alarms – alarms related to process equipment
Note:
- The University’s Asbestos Register must be reviewed prior to any work being carried out that may disturb asbestos containing material. This information must be provided by the managing supervisor (Authorised Person) and where appropriate, precautionary measures must be taken.
- The Asbestos Register must be consulted before any entry is made to voids, trenches, ceiling voids or roof/loft spaces.
