About us
Throughout his career, the architect, planner and urban historian Erwin Anton Gutkind (1886-1968) engaged with many of the key architectural concerns of the twentieth century, including mass housing, post-war reconstruction, environmental design and urban growth.
This project attempts to identify the factors that influenced Gutkind’s writings and aims to position them in the context of both his earlier architectural designs and contemporary and subsequent scholarship. Involving original archival research, the project provides an insight into the legacy of a prolific and influential, yet neglected architectural scholar.
It helps to shed light on our more general understanding of the research topics that Gutkind engaged with, including mass housing, post-war reconstruction, the environment and urban growth; topics that are of great relevance in this time of unprecedented environmental challenges and urban growth.
