MA Creative Writing, 2020
“I was attracted to the course by the literary fellows and the focus on workshopping and developing as a writer”
The departmental staff have been helpful and kind to me during my first year on the MA, and each has been receptive to my queries and feedback on the course.
‘An enjoyable challenge and becoming a writer’
You can write whatever appeals to you, being open to trying new things and methods I’m gaining the most from the course. I’ve enjoyed the Writing Voice module and can’t speak highly enough of the Poetry module which has an exceptional contemporary syllabus led by a brilliant teacher.
My writing is sharper, more focused a year into the course. I have a much greater understanding of developing a story and appreciate that the skill of writing well is not just in the task of writing itself. I am a stronger writer than I was a year ago, and I think that is because through feedback from peers and tutors I am becoming a good editor of my work.
‘I moved to Oxford a few years ago and love it here’
There are so many literary events happening on a regular basis that are free or low cost. I think it’s the best city to be in to study writing. Its literary history is so rich and the city is full of inspiration.
‘Writing success and the future’
I entered The 2019 SaveAs Writers’ International Prose Prize with my self penned folk tale The Old Moon and was delighted to win. I plan to keep writing poetry and short-stories and am currently experimenting with flash-fiction; for which one of my pieces was recently long-listed by Retreat West. I am hoping to write a children’s book inspired by Welsh folklore.
