LLB Law, 2014
“Taking a law degree at Brookes has given me a solid start to pursuing a career in the legal profession”
Sarah Macpherson wanted to practice Law for as long as she can remember and following work experience placements at law firms as well as attending an educational course at Villiers Park in Foxton she was ready to embark on her LLB at Oxford Brookes.
Brookes has an excellent teaching reputation as well as offering a range of extra-curricular activities. The staff really get to know students personally and are able to offer tailored advice; not only about the course and which modules to select, but also options for your future career.
Taking a law degree at Brookes has given me a solid start to pursuing a career in the legal profession, and although many of my modules in my first and second year were compulsory as part of the Qualifying Law Degree, my third year was almost entirely electives of my choice, allowing me to take modules that I may wish to practice in the future.
The School of Law hosted a range of open days and talks where students are able to liaise with law firms to find out what they’re looking for and how to make successful applications. Brookes also offers a range of pro-bono activities that students can participate in and the chance to enter an inter-university mooting competition. It has become clear from law firms that they are looking for more than academic success but also look for extra-curricular activities.
Oxford is known as a student city and there are plenty of things for students to do. I particularly enjoyed visiting restaurants, showing my friends the historic parts of the city and had a couple of tries at punting! There are also plenty of lovely open spaces to work outside as well as the famous Bodleian library.
I have just confirmed my place on a Legal Practice Course with the University of Law and so after completing this I will be looking to get a training contract and become a solicitor specialising in commercial and corporate law. Ultimately I would like to be a partner of a firm, or a member of the judiciary.
