BA (Hons) Fine Art
The course had everything I was looking for.
It offers the perfect balance of structure and creative freedom, allowing me to shape my art practice while exploring incredible opportunities. The studio spaces are a great size, the variety of UK-based and international field trips is amazing, and all of the technicians and workshops are wonderful. There’s sometimes a misconception that creative careers are limited, but in reality, over two million jobs in the UK fall within the Creative Industry. This course opens up an incredible range of career possibilities, both during and after university.
I've enjoyed everything about the course so far.
It’s split into three main module areas - practice, critical theory and real world/careers. This combination is quite unique to this course, and sets it apart from other courses. Currently, I am completing Placement in the Creative and Cultural Industries, an optional module in Semester 2 of 2nd year (you can choose between this and Real Art World 2). The module acts like in-depth work experience, and I have been involved in some amazing opportunities; I helped with set design and running the VIN+OMI Fashion Show (London Fashion Week) in February 2025, and learned all about the fashion industry and what it's like to run such a fast-paced event.
All of the tutors (and technicians!) are lovely.
Everyone has your best interest in becoming the artist you want to be. They push you to achieve your best and constantly challenge you to think outside the box. The tutors are all incredibly good at replying to emails in a timely manner and it's very easy to book one-on-one sessions during their dedicated drop-in hours each week. Each student is also assigned an Academic Advisor, who serves as a key point of contact throughout your degree. They will check in with you at least twice a semester, and you can always reach out to them for support, whether it's about the course or student life in general.
From my experience on the course, I have some helpful tips for new students.
Firstly, I recommend reading module guides and Moodle pages early, especially before each semester, to get ahead on the material and know what to expect in lectures and seminars. Also, I suggest attending as many workshop sessions as you can to learn new skills and expand your art practice. Workshops like Letterpress, Screen Printing, and Virtual Reality allow you to gain valuable skills; the technicians are incredibly knowledgeable. Finally, keep an open mind, take risks, and try new things. You may discover new materials or techniques, and even mistakes can lead to amazing results in the long term.
I would like a career in the fashion industry.
With my growing expertise in textiles, sculpture, and screen printing, I aspire to work in high-fashion styling and editorial design—ideally for a magazine like Vogue. The guidance from my placement tutor, Lucy Phillips, has been especially instrumental in helping me to realise this goal.
