LLB Law with Criminology
My decision to study Law with Criminology at Oxford Brookes University,
was driven by my strong passion for the criminal legal sector and my career aspirations. The programme’s distinctive blend of law and criminology offers a strong foundation in legal principles, while also delving into the root causes and consequences of crime. Importantly, it is a qualifying law degree, enabling me to pursue my ambition of becoming a legal professional. Oxford Brookes' excellent reputation, supportive learning environment, and strong industry connections were key factors in my choice.
The course content has been exceptional
It has allowed me to delve into a diverse range of legal and criminological topics. I particularly enjoyed modules such as Criminal Law, Tort Law, Theories of Crime, The Prison and Imprisonment, Parents, Children and The State, and Medical Law. Each module provided unique insights into the complexities of the legal system, strengthening my analytical skills and understanding of the broader societal impacts of law and crime. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme has been particularly valuable, connecting legal studies with criminological perspectives.
My tutors have been consistently supportive
They’ve offered guidance and encouragement throughout my studies. Their support has been crucial in my academic development, helping me grasp complex legal concepts and apply them effectively. Their career advice has also been invaluable, boosting my confidence in my future aspirations. Beyond academics, the opportunity to network and build connections has been invaluable. The course has facilitated access to networking events and practical experiences that have significantly strengthened my passion for law. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is to embrace every opportunity university offers. Networking events, internships, and extracurricular activities are crucial for personal and professional growth. While academic dedication is essential, enjoying the university experience and building lifelong memories is equally important. One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give to future students is to truly enjoy the course and university life because it goes by so quickly!
Stepping outside my comfort zone has been a significant challenge, but also incredibly rewarding
Take every opportunity that comes your way, even if it feels daunting at first, putting yourself out there is always worth it. This has boosted my confidence and reinforced my ability to handle future challenges. Even challenging modules have proven valuable, demonstrating my ability to tackle complex subjects and contributing to my overall growth as a legal student. I have actively sought practical opportunities to prepare for my legal career. This includes attending law fairs, various panel talks and completing work experience at a law firm in Oxford. My time in the Crown Court and Magistrates’ Court, where I followed a Crown Court case from initiation to resolution shadowing two incredible barristers and assisted solicitors in client representation, provided invaluable hands-on learning depending on my understanding of the criminal justice system. Analysing case files and interacting with clients strengthened my advocacy and analytical skills. My volunteer work as a legal companion through the CLOCK programme and my time with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have further enhanced my practical legal skills and understanding of the legal process. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to access to justice and client advocacy.
Throughout my studies, I have developed a strong skill set essential for a career in law
My future plans involve pursuing a career as a criminal solicitor. I'm driven by a passion for supporting individuals, providing guidance through challenging times and ensuring fair representation within the legal system. My goal is to make a meaningful impact in the criminal law sector, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to justice. I am dedicated to making my family proud and contributing positively to the legal profession.
