BA Photography and MA Professional Photography
The master’s course is both welcoming and inspiring, encouraging a broader perspective.
It’s for anyone who is passionate about photography, about something specific they want to become a voice for, or about visual storytelling and the power it holds. It’s an honour to be taught by such a fantastic group of personalities and to be surrounded by like-minded, caring people.
I first joined Brookes to study my bachelor’s degree in BA Photography.
I really enjoyed the variety of academic and social opportunities the University had to offer. During my MA in Professional Photography, I’ve come to appreciate its international and online focus, which allows for flexible distance learning. The international students, alongside the guest lecturers, bring their own culture and perspectives into the course learning, which creates wonderful diverse, colourful insights. The degree encourages students to engage with the course outline through their own passions and interests, resulting in outcomes that authentically reflect each student's individuality.
The relationships with the tutors are very respectful, positive and supportive.
Their feedback is constructive and forward-focused, helping us to continue developing our craft. They excel at inspiring students to discover their passions in photography while fostering a deeper understanding of the medium’s power, as well as the moral and ethical responsibilities it entails. They are highly accommodating, always quick to respond to queries or provide guidance and advice when needed.
Each student on the bachelor’s degree pursued different directions in photography.
This was inspiring to see, and was a direct outcome of a programme designed to encourage creatives to not only meet course requirements but to go above and beyond by exploring their individual passions and approaches. The master’s degree consists of a wonderful mix of mature students that are already engaged and passionate about their craft. The lectures explore the histories and theoretical aspects of photography in greater depth, while also tackling fundamental questions about its purpose and significance. This masters is a fantastic continuation of the bachelors degree; engaging in gripping group discussions, profound reflections and useful learnings.
Creative freedom and support are integral aspects of the photography courses.
Students are able to immerse themselves in work that not only fulfills the course requirements, but actually aligns with their passions and future endeavours. This bachelor's degree was pivotal in my understanding of photography, the practice, the theory, the responsibilities and the power the medium holds. The tutors and visiting speakers are the sole reason I am in the position I am in today — able to do what I love and appreciate it. The master's degree delves into the meaning and purpose of photography at a much deeper level and has successfully inspired my work that I am engaged in today. I appreciate the network the cohort has created, offering a welcoming and informative exchange amongst each other.
The courses go beyond preparing you for a 9-5 role.
You have the privilege to learn from so many active, inspiring industry professionals, including the tutors and visiting speakers. They truly care about their craft and are willing to share their passions, advice and real-life knowledge with you. I have grown so much personally, gaining insights which have informed my work and identity as a photographer today. Photography isn’t just about the device itself - it goes beyond that and is simply a tool to a world you would not have access to in this manner otherwise. The invaluable lessons from both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees are learning how to conduct yourself professionally, be a respectful creative, and truly care about the work you do.
