MSc International Hospitality, Events and Tourism

I chose to study a postgraduate course at Oxford Brookes for a number of reasons

Firstly, I had previously studied at Oxford Brookes and I enjoyed my experience, I felt the support they offered was good. Secondly, Oxford Brookes offered the course I wanted to study as a postgraduate student. I did look at a number of different options and I felt that Oxford Brookes offered the course which was closest to my interests.

I’ve been enjoying all of my modules

I find learning about how to carry out research interesting and have found the information offered very engaging. I’ve particularly enjoyed Dark Tourism; I find learning about how different areas interpret their dark histories interesting. You can also apply what you learn to other aspects of tourism.

When I have a problem…

I have been able to contact the tutor easily and they have responded in good time. The course tutors all have office hours where they are able to have meetings with you to discuss something you may be stuck on or something you need help with. The other students on my course come from all over the world and I find it fascinating finding out about different countries and their cultures. We have a few group projects on the course and I’ve made some good cohort friends who I work with for each of these projects. During the first semester of my course I’ve attended two field trips, one to Oxford castle, and the other to the Hellfire caves while studying the Dark Tourism module. There are also other optional field trips I could have gone on. There are more trips planned for next semester.

I came into this master’s having no experience in the hospitality, events or tourism industry

However, I knew I was interested in this industry and by studying this course it has helped me recognise where my key interests lie. When I graduate, I’m interested in working in the tourism side of the industry, to develop visitor experiences at Heritage sites for young children as I will be able to use the skills I’ve learnt from my postgraduate course and also utilise my previous primary education qualification.
