Applied Languages, 2020
“The course is great, it is well designed and it offers a thorough overview of what you have to do in order to achieve your objectives. Brookes is more than my university. It is a community and it is family”
I am originally from Italy, but moved to Oxford after secondary school to improve my English. I have always been passionate about languages, so taking the Applied languages course seemed the natural choice. I am improving my English whilst learning two more languages from scratch: French and Spanish.
The course combines languages with a pathway of your choice, which in my case is Education. I chose this pathway because it will definitely help me to specialise in foreign language teaching in the future. The course structure really helps you to organise your studies as you can choose which modules you take. The course also provides you with a great amount of knowledge about cultures and the languages themselves.
In my 3rd year I will do an internship abroad. This is what really attracted me to the Applied Languages course at Brookes. I wanted to be able to gain work experience prior to graduating, therefore making it easier for me to find a job. In general the course is great, it is well designed and it offers a thorough overview of what you have to do in order to achieve your objectives.
I feel comfortable studying here as you receive lots of support; you can really count on your tutors as well as your classmates for help. I love the atmosphere at Brookes, it is a multicultural environment and you really get to know different people from all around the world. Oxford is an international city where everybody is different but also the same. Student life is amazing because the city is full of useful sites that allow you to broaden your mind and make your experience remarkable.
As an international student, you shouldn’t be afraid to try new things or to leave your own country. Brookes offers lots of different activities, and it’s good to get involved in as many as possible. You will meet other people, and it will give you a good balance between studying and having free-time. You will also improve your language skills if you chill out with people coming from different countries. Most importantly, you NEVER feel alone. Brookes is more than a university, it is a community, and it is family.
