MA International Relations

I decided to stay at Oxford Brookes

for my MA in International Relations after completing my undergraduate degree here in International Relations and Politics. I already knew how well-structured the course was and how engaging the lectures and seminars were, so it felt like the right place to refine my knowledge. The MA gave me the opportunity to specialise in International Political Economy (IPE) while also exploring a mix of socio-economic and environmental modules. This balance really shaped my future career aspirations, allowing me to develop a broad yet specialist perspective on global issues.

The tutors at Oxford Brookes were a fantastic mix of specialists

approachable, supportive, and genuinely passionate about their subjects. They created a really fertile learning environment, and I always felt like I was part of the department. Their enthusiasm and expertise helped me to engage deeply with the course and push my own thinking further.

My cohort was a great mix of people.

Some, like me, were continuing their studies at Oxford Brookes, while others had come from different universities to specialise further. Having such a range of perspectives in discussions really added to the experience, and I valued the opportunity to work alongside people with different academic backgrounds and viewpoints.

One of the biggest takeaways from the course was

the ability to move from a ‘generalist’ approach to a  specialist mindset. The range of methodologies, schools of thought, and subject areas we explored helped me develop a flexible way of thinking, which has been invaluable in my career. The course challenged me to think critically, problem-solve, and work outside the box - skills that have been hugely beneficial since graduating.

I now work at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA),

and I use the knowledge and skills from my MA every day. My role involves working on commercial arrangements areas directly related to the delivery of the body’s political economy and the environmental goals; exactly the topics I focused on during my studies. Having that academic background means I can apply what I learned at Oxford Brookes in a practical and meaningful way with my work.

For anyone considering the MA International Relations at Oxford Brookes,

I would definitely recommend it. Not only was the course content exactly what I was looking for, but the learning environment was incredibly supportive. The university encourages innovation and new ideas, and it gave me the confidence to explore different career pathways. Studying here has been a hugely positive experience, and I’m really glad I chose to continue my studies with Oxford Brookes.
