LLB Law with Criminology

This course directly aligns with my aspiration of becoming a human rights barrister

I'm particularly interested in criminology because it explores the "why" behind criminal behavior - the social, psychological, and cultural factors that contribute to crime - which goes beyond the scope of a traditional law degree.  While law provides the essential legal frameworks and principles, criminology offers a crucial perspective on the societal context in which law operates.

By integrating legal theory with criminological analysis,

I've developed a broader, more nuanced perspective, enhancing my ability to evaluate both legal structures and the societal contexts that shape them. This comprehensive understanding of criminal justice is essential for addressing human rights and social justice issues. I've particularly enjoyed modules in Criminal Law and Tort Law. The Criminal Law module was intellectually stimulating and engaging, allowing me to explore the intricacies. My first year Criminology class was equally fascinating, providing a comprehensive overview of criminological theories and practices.

The seminars for these modules were especially beneficial

They provided opportunities to apply legal principles and concepts to practical scenarios, which helped me understand not only the theory but also how the law is implemented in real-life situations. Working through case studies and hypothetical situations made learning dynamic and insightful, deepening my understanding of how legal systems function. These experiences have been crucial to my academic and professional development, equipping me with practical skills for my future career.

My tutors have been incredibly positive and supportive

They've provided valuable guidance, especially regarding opportunities in criminology and law. I appreciate their regular check-ins to discuss my academic and personal well-being. Their support goes beyond academics; they genuinely care about my holistic growth. Initially, I was nervous about participating in seminars, worried about giving incorrect answers or not articulating my thoughts effectively. I learned not to fear mistakes, as they're a natural part of learning. Everyone is there to learn, and others likely share the same concerns. The seminar tutors are incredibly supportive and understanding, guiding you toward clearer and more accurate ways of expressing your answers. Their constructive feedback improved my understanding and boosted my confidence in speaking up.

Prioritise time management and organisation

It's easy to fall behind with the extensive readings and assessments.  A well-structured plan is essential for staying on top of tasks and readings.  Equally important is preparing for seminars and lectures in advance. Familiarising yourself with the material beforehand allows for more effective engagement and a deeper understanding of the discussions. This proactive approach significantly improves the learning experience and reduces pressure.

I've taken advantage of every opportunity offered by Oxford Brookes

Career days, external training programmes, and professional symposiums. These experiences have allowed me to develop essential skills like communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability, as well as enhance my technical expertise and understanding of industry best practices. I volunteer with Refugee Education UK as a mentor, developing interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and the ability to provide guidance and support. I'm also an active member of several university societies and serve on their committees, gaining leadership experience, organisational skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups. These experiences have broadened my professional perspective and enhanced my career readiness.

I'm excited to study abroad before completing my third year

After graduating, I plan to pursue a Master’s in Human Rights with the goal of becoming a barrister. Oxford Brookes has provided a solid foundation, equipping me with the academic knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed. The experiences, opportunities, guidance, and support I've received have instilled a strong sense of direction and confidence in my career path. I'm eager to continue building on these foundations as I pursue my professional goals.
