Matthew Catterall

Role

Matthew Catterall is Principal Lecturer and Programme Lead for the BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science programme and Co-Theme Lead for Paramedic Science Research within the Centre for Movement, Occupation and Rehabilitation Sciences (MORES).

Matthew's teaching role coordinates the academic and practice-based learning opportunities for students. His teaching and research interests are focused on practice-based learning, students' experiences, and preparation for qualification. Alongside this, Matthew teaches various modules related to the professional development of paramedics and cardiology. 

Matthew qualified as a paramedic in 2001 as part of the first degree-paramedic cohort at the University of Hertfordshire. Since then, he has worked as a Paramedic, Emergency Care Practitioner (Specialist Paramedic), and Emergency Care Practitioner Clinical Lead (Advanced Paramedic) with the London Ambulance Service, where he continues to work part-time. 

Matthew's education career includes posts as a Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Science at the University of Hertfordshire, teaching on their BSc (Hons), FdSc and MSc Paramedic Science programmes, leading the BSc (Hons) Applied Paramedic Science programme. 

Matthew undertakes professional activities for the Health and Care Professions Council as a Paramedic Registrant Visitor for Fitness to Practice and Education. Matthew Charied their third Curriculum and Career Framework Review for the College of Paramedics and has been a member of their Education Advisory Committee. Recently, Matthew co-chaired the College of Paramedics Practice-Based Learning review, leading stakeholder consultation and production of this national document. Matthew holds a Diploma in Immediate Medical Care from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, where he is a current examiner. 

Matthew's research interest took hold during his Master’s degree in Cardiology and Education. He has presented a literature review exploring the role of Critical Care Paramedics. Currently, Matthew is studying for a Professional Doctorate in Education, exploring the experiences of student paramedics during practice-based learning. These research activities have allowed him to act as an Expert Advisor for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) proposals.

I teach on a range of modules, predominantly supporting students in practice and utilising my expertise in cardiology.
