Research
I work mainly in the field of opera studies and am particulalry interested in the construction of identity in music/musical theatre, especially regarding nationalism and patriotism in transnational contexts. I undertake research on music and propaganda, music and public celebration and history of opera in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Some of my major research projects include the reconstruction of the cultural and musical environment in Habsburg and Napoleonic Milan (1790-1802), music and celebration in early-eighteenth-century Lombardy under Spain and the Habsburgs and the relationship between opera, satire and politics in nineteenth-century Italy.
I am also active in the field of musical iconography, where I work on illustrated periodicals of the nineteenth century linked to the musical and theatrical sphere.
