Databases
This list contains details of electronic databases available to Oxford Brookes staff and students on the web. First listed are the Databases that allow you to search for references for journal articles and other publications in your subject area. Some databases provide an indexing service only, some also provide abstracts (summaries) and others are full text. For more information on using these services see the How to search catalogues and databases page.

Note: Databases are usually available on and off-campus. Most will prompt you to log in with your Brookes ID and password. The Library Electronic Resources pages provide details of passwords for resources not covered by this.
Academic Search Complete
Multi-disciplinary database for academic articles, reports and conference proceedings. Full text access to more than 5,800 scholarly publications, including more than 5,350 peer-reviewed journals. EBSCO.
Business Source Complete
Over 2000 full text journals, including The Bookseller and Publishers Weekly, plus abstracts only from over 540 journals. Also includes books, industry reports, country reports and company profiles. Covers management, economics, finance, accounting and business. EBSCO.
Communication & Mass Media Complete
Full-text links to over 450 journals and indexing and abstracting for over 770. Covers fields of media studies, film studies, communications, advertising, and new media. Particularly good for journalism, photojournalism and the social aspects of photography. EBSCO.
JSTOR
Full-text articles from a wide range of academic journals, including some key music, film and photography journals. JSTOR does not give access to issues which are less than 3-5 years old but is very useful for older journal articles. Clearing cookies often helps if you have trouble using JSTOR.
MLA International Bibliography with Full Text
An index and full-text database covering leading publications in a range of subjects including film, publishing, media studies, and digital media. EBSCOSociological Abstracts
Covers a broad range of subjects including sociology, political theory, social anthropology. Covers material published since 1952. Also includes cited references for all journal articles indexed on the database since 2002. ProQuest.
ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations)
Circulation and distribution data for media such as newspapers and magazines, across the range of formats, in the UK and Ireland. Access the report archive and current and historical data for individual titles, back to 2000. Use your @brookes.ac.uk email to create an account.
Bookseller.com
Access to latest news, features, blogs, rights news, bestseller charts, profiles and blogs. First-time users will need to register in order to receive a password. Online full-text access to the Bookseller magazine is available via the website for current issues back to 10 years ago (via the editions page once you are logged on), and via Business source complete for 2002 - 2011. We also have print in the library.
British Standards Online
This includes access to the full text of all current British Standards.
Nielsen BookScan
Sales statistics for the UK consumer book market.
PA Export Toolkit
A resource for publishers on the business of exporting. Includes Country Profiles, information on Book Fairs, Resources and Insights.
Publishers Weekly Digital Archive
A trade publication for the US publishing industry. Includes industry news and book reviews as well as coverage of the British book trade. Digitised content from 1872 to 12 months ago.
WARC
A database from the World Advertising Research Center, it covers journals, news, case studies and data on advertising and marketing.
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
An illustrated collection of articles providing the life stories of over 65,000 people who have shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the earliest times to those who died in recent years. Includes writers, publishers, editors and booksellers.
UK data archive
The largest collection of digital data in the social sciences in the UK. Also houses a major collection of computerised historical material.
Fame
Fame contains the accounts and other details of over 160,000 of the largest active UK and Irish companies. It provides 10 years of financial history information, shareholders, subsidiaries, corporate structures and stock profile data for quoted companies.
IBISWorld
IBISWorld, a database with market information for a wide range of industries. IBISWorld is particularly strong on: heavier industries (mining, agriculture, construction) manufacturing service and entertainment sectors (including tourism and the arts), education and healthcare.
Mintel
UK market research data. Information on consumer lifestyles as well as useful industry, leisure, retail, technology and media intelligence reports.
Orbis
Orbis contains the accounts and other details of over 1.3 million international companies, including the UK. It provides 10 years of financial history information, shareholders, subsidiaries, corporate structures and stock profile data for quoted companies. Patent information is available for over 100,000 companies.
Passport
Passport contains international country, consumer lifestyles, economic and market research reports from Euromonitor International.
Lexis+
The News tab of this legal database gives full-text access to regional and national newspapers including the Guardian, Independent,Times and Daily Telegraph. It is an excellent source for reviews, film reviews, and arts news. It does not include images. Click on 'Content' under the search box on the homepage, then choose Newspapers.
British Periodicals
An archive of hundreds of full text periodicals from the late 17th century to the early 20th century, covering history, literature, music, philosophy, drama, archaeology, architecture, science, art and the social sciences. ProQuest.
Burney Collection
17th-18th century newspaper collection. Includes newspapers and news pamphlets published in England, Ireland and Scotland together with a selection of titles from British colonies in the Americas and Asia. Gale.
Early Modern books online
Digital facsimile page images of virtually every book published in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works printed elsewhere in English from 1473 - 1700. This amounts to 97,905 works in their entirety with bibliographic records for a further 8,500. ProQuest.
The John Johnson Collection
An archive of materials which document everyday life in Britain in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The materials include facsimile images of posters, handbills, broadsides and pamphlets covering entertainment, the booktrade, popular topographical prints, advertising, crime, murders and executions. ProQuest.
Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers
Access to the full text of a wide variety of national and regional British newspapers from the 19th century. Gale.
Nineteenth century UK periodicals, series 1
Access to digital editions of nearly 100 periodicals, including many full runs, published between 1800 and 1900. Series 1 relates to new readerships and covers titles aimed at women and children as well as topics such as sport and leisure, humour and satire. The associated Topic Guide includes a chronology and useful essays on the relevant readership groups and subject themes. Gale.
Rock's Backpages
Rock's Backpages is a database of rock music writing and journalism, with material dating from the early 1960s to the present day. It offers full text access to articles, reviews, and interviews. The database also includes Mp3 audio files of interviews.
The Guardian and The Observer (1791-2003)
The complete digital edition of both newspapers, 1791-2003, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations. ProQuest.
Times Digital Archive
The complete digital edition of The Times newspaper, 1785-2019, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations. Gale.
Vogue archive
Access to the complete run of US Vogue from 1892 to the most recent edition. Contains over 400,000 pages produced as high resolution full colour images. Searchable by, for example, designer, model, photographer, collection, garment or brand. ProQuest.
Women's Magazine Archive
An archive of several UK lifestyle and fashion magazines including Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan, indexed for efficient searching and scanned cover-to-cover up to 2005. Topics covered include health, careers, fashion, and culture, serving research areas such as gender studies, social history, the arts, politics, and marketing/media history. ProQuest.Mass Observation Online
A social history documentation project that offers insight into everyday life in Britain from 1937 to the mid-1950s. Includes original manuscript and typescript papers created and collected by the Mass Observation organisation, as well as printed publications, photographs and interactive features.Factiva
A multi-use, international news database covering national and regional newspapers, trade and professional journals, company profiles and share data, and transcripts of world radio broadcasts. Covers 152 countries in 22 languages. Covers US newspapers and entertainment magazines such as Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety; good for film reviews. Includes images from Reuters.
Box of Broadcasts (BoB)
An online archive giving you access to thousands of recorded radio and TV programmes including films. It allows users to record programmes which will then be stored on the database. Log in when prompted with your Brookes username and password.
Web of Science
In spite of its name, this database covers all subject areas. It's particularly useful for tracking citations to key articles. On Web of Science you can view an article and see a list of the author’s 'Cited References' - those sources that influenced the author. You can also see the article's influence on subsequent publications via the 'Times Cited' option.
Journals and e-journals
The library subscribes to both print and online journals relevant to Media, Journalism and Publishing. There are also some open access journals online. Find them in these ways:
- The best way to find individual journal articles, relevant to your topic, from a range of publications is to use a Database, see section above.
- Journals for Media, Journalism and Publishing is an annotated list of the library’s print journals relevant to your subject, and includes some ejournals.
- Browzine is an excellent way to find ejournals in your field and stay-up-to-date with the latest issues.
- LibrarySearch provides details of all the print and ejournals the Library subscribes to. Use the Journal titles tab or filter results to journals.

Books and e-books
Find all our books and ebooks using LibrarySearch (the search box on the Library homepage). Search, and then select 'Book' from the filters menu on the left. You can further limit your search to 'eBook' if you want.

Print books
LibrarySearch shows call numbers so you can find specific books on the shelves. If you'd like to browse, the printable guide at the top of this page gives some helpful call numbers to visit. For example, Journalism and Publishing books are shelved at 070 and Media at 302, but many other books of interest will be found elsewhere in the Library.
There are maps on each floor in the staircase area showing which call numbers are in which zones. You can also download a library floorplan (PDF). Oversize books are shelved separately near the book sequence. The Short Loan Collection next to the welcome desk contains books in heavy demand.

E-books
- O'Reilly Safari Learning Platform : a collection of e-books, videos, tutorials (Learning Paths) and Case Studies on various aspects of information technology. The selection includes desktop publishing, digital media, e-commerce, programming, IT management and business applications. O'Reilly titles can also be found via LibrarySearch. Access with Brookes login.
- EBooks Central : a collection of academic e-books for a range of subjects, including many business books. Individual titles appear on LibrarySearch. Access with Brookes login.
- Open Research Library and this list on Project Muse are examples of Open Access e-books, which are becoming increasingly available.

Internet sites
There are a large number of Media, Journalism and Publishing resources available on the Internet, just a few selected sites are listed below. There are many other useful and relevant sites available. Please evaluate web sources carefully.
Journal sites
- The Bookseller.com : access to latest news, features, blogs, rights news, bestseller charts, profiles and blogs. First-time users will need to register in order to receive a password. Online full-text access to the Bookseller magazine is available via Business source complete from 2002 - 2011
- Editor & Publisher Magazine : covers all aspects of the newspaper industry. US based.
- InPublishing : a bi-monthly magazine (formerly known as InCirculation) for UK magazine, newspaper and online publishers covering marketing, circulation and distribution. The Knowledge Bank is searchable and freely available, it contains articles on all aspects of the business. The home site also has podcasts, an events diary and job vacancies.
- Nieman Reports :online quarterly publication produced by the Nieman Foundation, whose mission is "to promote and elevate the standards of journalism”.
- Press Gazette - has been reporting on British journalism since 1965. Now online only.
- Publishers Weekly : access to breaking news
- The Journal of Publishing Culture : an open access journal written and produced by postgraduate students at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University

- Content Marketing Association (CMA) : professional body representing publishing and content marketing agencies in the UK. Some free content including case studies and research news.
- European Publishers Council (EPC) : made up of senior representatives from European media corporations. Their remit is to monitor and react to proposals for EU legislation or regulation that affect the media industry. Position papers and fact sheets are freely available
- FIPP : worldwide magazine media association. Lots of freely available content
- MagazineArt.org : a database of magazine covers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
- Magforum : all kinds of information about UK magazine publishing. Includes listings of publishers and publications and sector analysis and profiles
- PAMCo: The Publishers Audience Measurement Company : oversees audience measurement for the published media industry. It replaced the National Readership Survey (NRS) and is able to measure audiences of print and digital, across all platforms. Topline data is available on the website. More detailed data can be found via BRAD.
- Professional Publishers Association : represents the interests of the consumer, business and professional magazine publishing industry
- Science in the 19th Century Periodical: useful for the profiles of 16 periodicals, including The Boy's Own Paper and the Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine. The profiles include circulation figures where these exist
- UK Serials Group (UKSG) : international body for those involved in the publication, provision and management of print and electronic scholarly journals
- SRDS Brad advertising information on media titles. Listed here for info, no current access.

- Open Research Library : a single access point to open access books. Good for the arts and humanities, books are from a range of publishers. Curated by Knowledge Unlatched. This is the beta version.
- Oxford International Centre for Publishing : the Publishing Centre's own web pages including news and details of seminars, work experience opportunities and job vacancies.
- Penguin Archive: held at the University of Bristol
- Project Gutenberg : this is a collection of over 10,000 free electronic books, most of which are older literary works
- Publishing in Africa : the Web site for Oxford Brookes University Library's Special Collection on Publishing in Africa. The site provides links to other related websites around the world
- Publishing Perspectives : an online journal of international publishing news and opinion. Sign up for a free subscription to the daily email version
- The Telegraph has created a subscription offering full, free access to the news outlet’s website and app (including puzzles) for Brookes staff and students. Just use your University email address to sign up.
DVDs
The library has thousands of DVDs. If you don’t have a DVD Player, you can borrow an external DVD drive from the library welcome desk to plug into the USB port of your computer. The bulk of our DVDs are shelved around 791, but there are many others shelved throughout the collection. They are discoverable on LibrarySearch. Run the search, then use the format filter on the left of the results page to see just DVDs.
