Oxford Brookes University was delighted to welcome Moira Darlington, Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, who visited to learn more about the digital skills workshops delivered for the Oxford senior community.

The digital skills workshops held on campus and delivered by students in Oxford Brookes Business School, are designed to support the local community by building confidence and empowering independence with technology for the senior Oxford community. The workshops focus on teaching practical skills and providing support with essential digital tools, including emails, WhatsApp and phone storage. Volunteers focus on breaking down complex concepts into simple, step-by-step instructions, ensuring that the seniors feel comfortable working at their own pace.

The workshops were launched in 2022 and are now delivered by over 40 student volunteers, significantly enhancing the seniors' understanding of the digital world. Workshop activities include essential online tasks such as online shopping, email attachment, bill payment, ticket booking, and social media photo sharing.

Moira Darlington with our students

Interested in educational initiatives that support the Oxford community, Moira had heard all about our workshops through Margaret Simpson (Chair of Oxford 50+ Network) and contacted Oxford Brookes to see one in action.

Moira said: “I loved seeing the group in action. It is always heart-warming seeing people sharing their skills and time to help others and particularly encouraging to see the generations coming together like that. A brilliant idea to encourage volunteering and hopefully the students will take that idea into their workplaces in the future. Thank you for inviting me along."
