CENDEP scholarships: empowering the next generation of humanitarian leaders
Through the generosity of our supporters, the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) at Oxford Brookes University is able to offer scholarships and field trip opportunities that empower students to make a difference in the world.
Scholarships that empower
This year, thanks to the generosity of donors, CENDEP was able to award a full scholarship of £5,000 to Jennipher Amanio from Uganda. Jennipher's story is a testament to the transformative power of scholarships. After putting her postgraduate dreams on hold for seven years due to financial constraints, her scholarship allowed her to pursue her Master's programme. Jennipher expresses her gratitude:
"Words cannot even describe the mixed emotions of shock and excitement I had that day when I received the beautiful news of this offer. The weight of financial burden this scholarship lifted off my shoulders is remarkable. This far into the course, the knowledge I have obtained, connections made and the opportunities I see ahead of me after completing this course are endless thanks to your generosity. This opportunity has not only for me but for many of my nieces and nephews back home in Uganda who look up to me and hope that one day they too will pursue their studies to even higher levels than I have attained.’’

Field trips that shape careers
In addition to scholarships, donations also enable valuable field experiences. In May, with the support of donors, CENDEP funded a field trip to Ethiopia in collaboration with Arba Minch University. Five students received scholarships of £250 each, allowing them to participate in this transformative experience. Here's what some of the scholarship recipients had to say about their field trip to Ethiopia:
Ellen Shaw (UK): "I am extremely grateful for the scholarship I received, which enabled me to engage in an incredible research project in Ethiopia. This experience not only deepened my understanding of critical humanitarian issues and the ethical conduct of research but also introduced me to amazing people, opening many doors to further opportunities in the field I aspire to work in. It grounded my studies in real-life situations, which was invaluable in so many ways, enhancing my learning and leading to the writing of a published report. Without the support of donations, this opportunity would not have been possible for me—thank you!"
Syafiq Bin Sanusi (Malaysia): "I have learned a lot from the Ethiopia Field Trip, especially through gathering data from vulnerable communities and understanding the research process. Being a part of the CENDEP research team, collaborating with Arba Minch University and working with international organisations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and German Agency For International Cooperation (GIZ) was a valuable experience. It also gave me insight into different cultures and the process of reporting and presenting data to international Non-Governmental Organisations and UN agencies. I am also very grateful for the scholarship, as this field trip has helped enhance both personal and professional growth."
Sneha Maria (India): "Receiving the travel scholarship was instrumental in enabling my field trip to Ethiopia, a transformative experience that exceeded my expectations. It allowed me to achieve the goals I envisioned while applying, including meaningful interactions with vulnerable communities and gaining hands-on fieldwork experience. The trip added significant value to my resume, sparking interest in a recent interview where I was asked extensively about my experience. I honed critical skills such as conducting interviews ethically with vulnerable groups, navigating the challenges of field research, and collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders like Arba Minch University team. Moreover, I had the privilege of networking with professionals during the one day workshop from esteemed organisations like UNHCR and GIZ, making this journey both a professional milestone and a personal highlight. This scholarship not only enhanced my academic and career trajectory but also deepened my commitment to impactful research and global engagement."
