Support following the recent UK riots

We have all been shocked and appalled by the riots which have taken place across the UK over the last fortnight.

We are proud of the diversity within Oxford Brookes University and the communities we serve. We will not tolerate racism, discrimination or abuse at any time and we believe in respect, dignity and that everyone counts, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity.

Oxford and Swindon have not been impacted by the scenes of violent disorder that have taken place in other places across the country, and our campuses remain open as usual. However, we appreciate that people will feel anxious and concerned either because of what they have seen and read in the media and on social media, or because they have friends and family in those towns and cities that have been the focus of recent events.

Support for students

We encourage any students who need extra support at this time to reach out to us. The University’s student support and wellbeing services are available to support any students, and the Multifaith Chaplaincy Team is also here to support students of all faiths and none. Togetherall is available to all students for 24/7 online support. International students can also contact the International Student Advice Team via isat@brookes.ac.uk.

Our campuses remain open as usual but, if the current situation is affecting your studies or ability to travel to on-campus sessions or activities, please reach out to your Academic Advisor or Student Support Coordinator. Many staff members are on leave during August, so kindly follow any out-of-office guidance for alternative contacts.

Support for staff

Any colleagues who are concerned about travelling to or from campus should speak to their line manager.

We encourage staff to reach out for support if you need it. You may wish to speak to colleagues, including your line manager, get in touch with the People Directorate, or contact the Multifaith Chaplaincy Team who are available to support staff of all faiths and none.

The University’s Employee Assistance Programme, a free, confidential service which provides emotional support and practical guidance, remains available by phone 24/7, 365 days a year.

How to report an incident

Please do remain vigilant and report any concerns or suspicious activity to the police by calling 101, or, if there is an immediate danger, by calling 999. You can also make a report online to Thames Valley Police (for incidents in Oxford and the Oxfordshire area) or to Wiltshire Police (for incidents in Swindon and the Wiltshire area). If you are on or around campus and need immediate assistance, contact Oxford Brookes Security Services by calling 01865 60 3060.

There have been many reports of misinformation circulating on social media. The advice from police is to fact check and verify any information before you share it with others, and not to share if you have any doubts about its accuracy.
