Oxford Brookes lecturer named Law Teacher of the Year for 2022
An Oxford Brookes University Law lecturer has won a prestigious national award, naming him Law Teacher of the Year for 2022.
Principal Lecturer in Law, Marc Howe, was presented with the award by Oxford University Press (OUP) at an in-person event at Sandown Park Racecourse on Wednesday 22 June.
Marc is a University Teaching Fellow at Oxford Brookes, and specialises in tort law, evidence, criminal advocacy and communication skills for lawyers. He has been at the University for almost 25 years.
After the presentation of the award, Marc, who is a former practising solicitor, said: “I feel absolutely delighted and honoured to have been given this award, which recognises the central importance of teaching in university law schools.”
Marc’s nomination for the award came from a former student of his who is now a practising barrister. The nomination was also supported by the Head of the School of Law at Oxford Brookes, Professor Lucy Vickers.
A passion for teaching law extending beyond lecture theatres
Outside of his teaching Marc has a passion for helping his law students gain real-life and practical experience, and has coached the Oxford Brookes University teams that won the ESU Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competitions in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2019.
Mooting involves students conducting courtroom advocacy in mock courtroom, giving the opportunity for aspiring barristers to gain experience as close to real life as possible.
Law Teacher of the Year is an annual award which is hosted by Oxford University Press and is awarded to a leading law lecturer for that academic year.
Professor Vickers said of Marc’s win: “On behalf of the School of Law here at Oxford Brookes, I am delighted to hear of Marc’s win, and we are very proud of his achievement.
“Marc is a dedicated, professional and passionate law lecturer. He is highly committed to the students and this is proved in his endeavours that go beyond the lecture halls and classrooms. Our success in the Essex Court Chambers competition over the years is a huge credit to Marc.
“Marc thoroughly deserves this award and I am looking forward to continuing to work with him at Oxford Brookes University.”
