Everyday digital technologies for remote elder care

Only near is dear, as the saying goes. But in the era of digital technologies, does it still hold? In her talk, Dr. Tanja Ahlin will show what is special about people picking up the phone.

When living together is not the optimal choice, caring for family members - especially those who are reaching old age - becomes practiced in new ways that often depend on digital technologies. But technologies are not "just tools" that people use to achieve the means of care or communication. Dr. Tanja Ahlin’s fieldwork with families of Indian nurses shows how technologies come to shape what care means and how it should be practiced to be considered good, shaping the norms of gender and kinship along the way.
