Penguin Books: the most significant publisher of the twentieth century
This lecture will explore the development of Penguin and its impact on reading habits and on British society at large.
Tim Graham, a retired bookseller and publisher, has been collecting Penguins and studying the history of the company for nearly fifty years. The various Covid-related lockdowns inspired him to write his latest book on A.S.B. Glover: The Unacknowledged Genius of Penguin.
This lecture will explore the development of Penguin and its impact on reading habits and on British societyat large. Tim will also discuss the changing designs and quality of the books published, illustrated by examples from the extensive Steve Hare Penguin Collection, one of the University’s special collections.
