Virtual Subject Taster Sessions

Do you want to explore your degree options at university? We've got some fantastic Virtual Subject Taster Sessions aimed at first year sixth form and college students, to give you an interactive experience of a broad range of different subjects. They are accessible on a smartphone as well as a laptop or tablet. You can have a go at filming a stop motion animation, explore dystopian themes in literature, and use a virtual lab to explore the human anatomy, to name a few - or you can try them all! The subjects on offer are:

Art, Film, Digital Media and Photography

Our virtual Art, Film, Digital Media and Photography taster session will give you an insight into some of the topics you may cover on a related degree course. It aims to build on the knowledge and skills you have gained already, through A Level Art & Design, Film, or Media, or BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Creative Digital Media or Art & Design.

Through a series of interactive activities, you will learn:

  • Some background about animation, including what stop motion animation is
  • The process of filming your own short stop motion animation, which you can do on a smartphone
  • How to create an advert for a magazine

This course content will take about 2 hours to complete in total, though you may need to dedicate a bit of extra time for the activities, if you wish to complete them all. However, you don’t need to do this all in one go - you can stop and return to the session whenever suits you best!

Built Environment

Built Environment

Our virtual Built Environment taster session will give you an insight into some of the topics you may cover on a related degree course. It aims to build on the knowledge and skills you have gained already, through A Level Geography, or BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment. It can also be used as an introduction that you can jump straight into if you are new to Built Environment, and are just curious to see what it involves!

Through a series of interactive activities, you will:

  • Learn the Built Environment and Real Estate life cycle
  • Consider the future of cities
  • Explore sustainability

This course content will take about 2 hours to complete in total, though you may need to dedicate a bit of extra time for the activities, if you wish to complete them all. However, you don’t need to do this all in one go - you can stop and return to the session whenever suits you best!

Business

Our virtual Business taster session will give you an insight into some of the topics you may cover on a related degree course. It aims to build on the knowledge and skills you have gained already, through A Level Business Studies or Economics, or BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Business or Travel & Tourism. It can also be used as an introduction that you can jump straight into if you are new to Business, and are just curious to see what it involves!

The session will give you a taster of four key areas of Business:

  • Marketing
  • Events and Hospitality Management
  • Business Management
  • Accounting and Finance

This course content will take about 2 hours to complete in total, though you may need to dedicate a bit of extra time for the activities, if you wish to complete them all. However, you don’t need to do this all in one go - you can stop and return to the session whenever suits you best!

English

English

Our virtual English taster session will give you an insight into some of the topics you may cover on a related degree course. It aims to build on the knowledge and skills you have gained already, through A Level English Language, English Literature, Film, or another related course. It can also be used as an introduction that you can jump straight into if you are new to English, and are just curious to see what it involves!

Through a series of interactive activities, you will be able to critically engage with content which will hopefully provide a great point from which you can read further. In particular, you will look at one genre and one critical theory:

  • Dystopia and Utopia
  • Death of the Author, Roland Barthes and Post-Structuralism

This course content will take about 2 hours to complete in total, though you may need to dedicate a bit of extra time for the activities, if you wish to complete them all. However, you don’t need to do this all in one go - you can stop and return to the session whenever suits you best!

Healthcare

Our virtual Healthcare taster session will give you an insight into some of the topics you may cover on a related degree course. It aims to build on the knowledge and skills you have gained already, through A Level Biological or Human Sciences, or BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Health & Social Care.

The session includes a series of activities relating to both the theory and practical skills required for the following courses:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Midwifery
  • Paramedic Science
  • Nursing

Excitingly, you will get to use a virtual healthcare lab to learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the human body! This course content will take about 2.5 hours to complete in total, though you may need to dedicate a bit of extra time for the activities, if you wish to complete them all. However, you don’t need to do this all in one go - you can stop and return to the session whenever suits you best!

History and Criminology

History and Criminology

Our virtual History and Criminology taster session will give you an insight into some of the topics you may cover on a related degree course. It aims to build on the knowledge and skills you may have gained already, through A Level History, Law, Government & Politics, Philosophy & Ethics, or another related course. It can also be used as an introduction that you can jump straight into if you are new to History or Criminology, and are just curious to see what they involve!

Through a series of interactive activities, you will learn more about the history of crime and punishment in the UK, and think deeply about the reasons and intentions of legal systems and criminal punishment. You'll find details about:

  • Crime and punishment during the Tudor period
  • A timeline of crime in the UK
  • The type of research you could take on at university if you studied a related course
